The mission and/or main activities that contribute to being culturally significant:
OUTshine Film Festival is culturally significant because it keeps LGBTQ+ stories—and South Florida’s identity—on the big screen through a two-city festival that unites Miami and Fort Lauderdale. Evolving from the Miami Gay & Lesbian Film Festival (1998) and the Fort Lauderdale Gay & Lesbian Film Festival (2008), it merged under the OUTshine brand to reach a diverse, international audience while anchoring local cultural tourism. Beyond the flagship spring and fall editions, OUTshine runs year-round programs like Cocktails & Cinema and a virtual OUTshine At-Home option, and partners with landmark venues from Regal South Beach to Gateway and Savor Cinema—turning filmgoing into community, visibility, and economic lift across the region.
