The mission and/or main activities that contribute to being culturally significant:
Robert Kesten matters — a lot. As the leader of Stonewall National Museum, Archives & Library (SNMAL) in Fort Lauderdale, he’s not just preserving queer history — he’s fighting to make sure it’s told in full, vibrant color.
Robert’s got decades of global activism under his belt — from helping draft constitutions abroad to pushing for LGBTQ+ and human rights worldwide — and now channels all that into giving SNMAL a wider reach and sharper purpose. He also recognized that history isn’t one story: it’s thousands. Under his leadership, SNMAL isn’t just archiving for the few — he’s building a space that honors every voice in the LGBTQIA+ community, even those too often ignored.
At a time when civil rights and inclusion are under attack, having someone like Robert at the helm gives the community a fighting chance — because knowing our past matters for shaping a just future.
