The mission and/or main activities that contribute to being culturally significant:
Alan (or Alan) Beck has been a pioneering force in LGBTQ+ travel culture for more than three decades, founding FunMaps to empower queer travelers with safety, visibility, and affirmation across 41 cities worldwide—long before mainstream platforms embraced such inclusion
. At a time when guiding LGBTQ+-friendly destinations required insider knowledge, Beck innovated a bridge between hidden community spaces and global accessibility, turning printed gay travel maps into widely used online and mobile resources. His leadership extends beyond cartography. In May 2024, he was awarded a “Trail Blazer Award” in recognition of his contributions to travel, LGBTQ+ visibility, and human rights for communities across North America and beyond
FunMaps. Through the evolution of FunMaps—from traditional print to digital guides, mobile apps, and destination storytelling—Beck has elevated LGBTQ+ cultural exchange and tourism, making participation more accessible and celebrated. His mission has not only built a trusted travel brand, but also helped normalize queer spaces in the public imagination.
